Executive Order Related to Evictions and SoCal Wildfires
Governor Newsom issued Executive Order N-11-25 which imposes more restrictions on rental housing evictions in L.A. County. The specific provisions are as follows:
-
Suspension of Eviction Rules: A specific rule (Paragraph 3 of Section 1161 of the California Code of Civil Procedure) is temporarily suspended in Los Angeles County. This means rental housing providers cannot evict tenants for having individuals displaced by the emergency stay with them. This suspension is valid until March 8, 2025, or until the rule is canceled earlier.
-
Prohibition of Termination Notices: Rental housing providers are not allowed to issue notices to terminate a tenant’s lease because displaced individuals are staying with them. An exception is made if the notice is required by fire marshals or other government officials for safety reasons. This rule also lasts until March 8, 2025, or until it is canceled earlier.
