CPI for Determining 2026-2027 Rent Cap Under AB 1482
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has released the Consumer Price Index (CPI) data which is used to calculate the maximum allowable rent increase effective August 1, 2026 through July 31, 2027, for properties subject to California’s rent cap law (AB 1482 —Tenant Protection Act of 2019).
Under California's AB 1482 Tenant Protection Act of 2019, rent increases are capped at 5% plus the current local Consumer Price Index (CPI), or a maximum of 10%, whichever is lower. The specific CPI value varies by region as shown below.
For example, the maximum rent increase for properties located in the Los Angeles- Long Beach-Anaheim region is 8.7% (3.7% + 5%). If your property is not located in one of the specified regions, use the California CPI. However, please refer to your local ordinance or contact your CalRHA local affiliate because rent increases in certain cities may be subject to further restrictions.
